EMORY, Va. – Emory & Henry College Vice President for Athletics Dr. Anne Crutchfield is pleased to announce the hiring of Pam Newberry as the College's next Head Volleyball Coach. Newberry joins the E&H staff after an extremely successful six-year run at nearby Patrick Henry High School.
"Coach Newberry brings a wealth of knowledge to our volleyball program," said Crutchfield. "She is a proven winner and will no doubt elevate our program to the next level."
In her six years leading the Rebels (2017-22), Newberry amassed a 131-31 overall record, winning the 2018 VHSL Class A State Championship with a total of five state appearances. Patrick Henry additionally made the state semifinals in 2019 and the spring 2021 season with her 2019 squad winning 31 matches.
"It is such an honor to be able to say I am a Wasp again," said Newberry. "Volleyball has been such a big part of my life, and to continue sharing my love and passion for the game at this level is a blessing."
Newberry has coached four All-State First Team players including a State Player of the Year, to go along with a pair of All-State Second-Teamers. The Rebels won five-straight Hogoheegee District titles on their way to three Region D Championships and two region runner-up finishes. For her efforts, Newberry has been recognized as the Region D Coach of the Year twice and earned three Hogoheegee Coach of the Year accolades.
Newberry also spent the 1994 and 1995 seasons as an assistant on the Emory & Henry staff and served as an assistant at Abingdon High School in the early 1990s.
"I am thankful to Anne Crutchfield and her staff for giving me this opportunity. I am excited to continue the growth that Emory & Henry has seen recently with the transition to Division II," Newberry added. "The current team has a strong foundation and we are all ready to put in the hard work needed to contend for championships."
As a player, Newberry was a four-year letterwinner at East Tennessee State University from 1988 to 1992. She helped lead the Buccaneers to an 84-44 overall record with a 29-9 mark in the Southern Conference. During that time, ETSU posted a pair of SoCon Regular Season Championships and one SoCon Tournament Title.
Newberry graduated from ETSU with a Bachelor of Science in physical education in 1997. She resides in Glade Spring with her husband, Aaron. The couple has a daughter, Logan, who is currently a freshman at Concord University and a member of the Mountain Lions' volleyball team, and a son Brady who is currently a junior at Patrick Henry.
Additionally, Newberry has announced that Lauren Coolidge (E&H '20) will be join the staff as Assistant Volleyball Coach. Coolidge spent the past two club seasons coaching with Palmetto Strikers Volleyball Club in Mount Pleasant, South Carolina. She served as the head coach for the 14U team in 2020-21 and the 15U team in 2021-22, leading both to winning seasons, while assisting with the 13U program.
Coolidge also has experience assisting with the boys' volleyball team at her alma mater, Fort Lauderdale High School as well as working numerous skill development camps for ages 12-18 to go along with implementing strength & conditioning programs to increase ability while reducing the risk of injury.
In her four years as a player at Emory & Henry, Coolidge was the libero for three seasons, amassing 939 digs, 139 assists and 79 service aces over 81 matches played. She graduated from the College in December 2020 with a Bachelor of Arts in applied history and social sciences.
