Emory & Henry Women’s Swimming Ranked Seventh In NCAA Division III

SOMERS, Wis. – The Emory & Henry College Women's Swimming Team can now add a Top 10 National Ranking to their tally of program firsts for the 2013-14 season. The Wasps achieved a seventh-place ranking among NCAA Division III programs for their performance at the 2014 Old Dominion Athletic Conference Championships last weekend.

The rankings are compiled via "Performance Points," which score each team's top 27 swims in a given meet over a three-week period.

E&H, just in its second year as a varsity program, finished second at the 2014 ODAC Championships, winning six of the 18 events on the weekend. Only Washington and Lee University, which won its seventh-straight league title, won more events than the Wasps (10). W&L is third for this ranking period.

Emory & Henry is well represented in the top times list as well, as its swimmers earned four NCAA "B" Qualifying Standards during the conference meet. Freshmen Allison Fowler (Morristown, Tenn.) and Michaela Nolte (Hillsborough, N.C.) were named ODAC Swimmer and ODAC Rookie of the Year, respectively, for their efforts.

Fowler notched two individual wins and came in second in her third event, while also propelling the Wasps to a pair of relay titles. She is currently 26th in the country in the 200-yard butterfly (2:07.81) and the 400-yard individual medley (4:33.74), earning "B" standards in both events. Fowler's 400-IM crushed the ODAC record while her 200-fly time is a new meet best. Her swim of 2:10.17 in the 200-yard individual medley puts her 50th in Division III.

Nolte, who won two individual titles and swam on a pair of first-place relays, has the 15th-fastest times in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:05.49) and the 200-yard breaststroke (2:22.81). Both of those swims were good enough for ODAC records as well as a NCAA "B" cut. Nolte is also ranked 41st in the 50-yard freestyle (:24.19).

Sophomore Payton Shirey (Seaford, Del.) set a new ODAC record during prelims in 50-yard freestyle (:23.91), which was just .02 off the NCAA mark for the 19th-best swim this year. She was second in the finals of the 50-free. Freshman Liz Kleveno (Fredericksburg, Va.) is 41st after finishing second in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:06.89).

The Emory & Henry relays are among the best in the country as all five are ranked in the top 25. The Wasps' 400-yard freestyle relay is 10th after winning the ODAC championship with a record of 3:31.94. The 200-yard freestyle relay remains 13th-fastest (1:36.96) with its swim at the Union Winter Invitational in December. E&H's 400-yard medley relay went 3:55.78 for an ODAC championship and is ranked 17th in Division III.

The 800-yard freestyle relay (7:55.82) and the 200-yard medley relay (1:48.31) achieved national rankings of 23rd and 24th, respectively.
