Emory & Henry Women’s Basketball Falls To Wingate, 92-62, Saturday In SAC Play

WINGATE, N.C. – The Emory & Henry University Women's Basketball Team (6-20, 4-16 SAC) dropped its South Atlantic Conference road game to Wingate University (18-8, 13-7 SAC) Saturday afternoon. The Bulldogs had four different players score in double figures and shot over 60% overall to take the win by a 92-62 final.

How It Happened
- Wingate jumped on the Wasps early, taking a 14-1 lead through the opening five and a half minutes of play. The Bulldogs continued to knock down shots from the field and saw their advantage grow to 29-10 at the end of the first quarter.
- WU maintained its margin through the opening stages of the second quarter and the score stood at 41-21 with 4:17 left in the first half. Wingate seemingly could not miss from the field as they took a 52-28 lead into the halftime break.
- Wingate kept its foot on the gas pedal to start the second half and the margin eclipsed the 30-point mark at 64-31 at the 5:37 mark. The home team kept the visitors out of striking distance throughout the period and took the 74-45 advantage to the fourth quarter.
- The Bulldogs' lead reached its largest of the contest at the 3:01 mark of the fourth as they pushed the scoreline out to 91-54. It was all Wingate on the afternoon as the Bulldogs rolled to a 92-62 victory. 

Emory & Henry Leaders
- Graduate student forward Breanna Yarber (Meadowview, Va.) led the offense for E&H as she finished with 18 points, four blocks, three rebounds and a steal. Freshman guard Julie Matheson (Boone, N.C.) went for a career-high 15 points on five made three-point baskets, two rebounds, one steal and a blocked shot.
- Sophomore guard Tori West (Richmond, Va.) finished with 13 points, three assists and a trio of rebounds while junior guard Rhyan Harris (Salem, Va.) collected nine points, four rebounds and three assists.

Wingate Individual Leaders
- Laura Montiel went for a team-high 16 points, four rebounds, four assists and three steals. Laney Beale posted 14 points, six assists, four steals and a rebound.
- Maggie Shorma recorded 14 points, four assists, one steal and a rebound while Kyleigh Bacon registered 12 points, eight rebounds and a steal.

A Deeper Look
- Emory & Henry shot 39.3% (22-for-56) overall and 32.1% (9-for-28) from three-point land. The Wasps were 9-for-12 (75.0%) at the free throw line.
- Wingate went 37-for-60 (61.7%) from the floor and 10-for-15 (66.7%) from long range. The Bulldogs converted 80.0% (8-for-10) of their tries from the charity stripe.
- WU outrebounded the Wasps by a 32-27 margin, but E&H put up 14 second chance points compared to just nine for the Bulldogs.
- Wingate forced 20 Emory & Henry turnovers that they converted into 30 points. The Wasps made the Bulldogs turn the ball over on 13 occasions, turning those mistakes into nine points.
- Wingate held a massive 54-24 advantage on points scored in the paint.
- WU got out in transition, putting up 18 points on the fastbreak while the Wasps managed just five.
- The home team assisted on 28 of their 37 made field goals, compared to 12 helpers on 22 buckets for the Wasps.
