NEWBERRY, S.C. – The Emory & Henry University Women's Basketball Team (5-17, 3-13 SAC) was defeated on the road in South Atlantic Conference play by Newberry College (12-10, 6-10 SAC) Saturday afternoon. The Wasps battled back from a 10-point halftime deficit, but eventually came up just short by the 69-64 final scoreline.

How It Happened
- The teams traded blows to begin the contest and a jumper from junior guard Rhyan Harris (Salem, Va.) cut the Wasps' deficit to just one at 11-10 with 2:41 to play. The Wolves pushed their lead out to five, but a three from sophomore guard Tori West (Richmond, Va.) brought them back within a pair at 15-13. NC added one more bucket to take a 17-13 advantage into the second quarter.
- The Wolves began the second frame on a quick 7-2 run, and continued to balloon the margin out to 15 at 36-21 with 3:20 left in the half. The Wasps finished with seven of the final nine points of the stanza to pull back within 10 at 38-28 heading into the locker room at the halftime break.
- Emory & Henry recorded the first six points in the first three and a half minutes of the second half to claw back within just four at 38-34. The Wolves would create more breathing room for themselves over the following six minutes of action, outscoring E&H by a 15-2 margin. Junior forward Gracyn Hall (Randleman, N.C.) knocked down a jumper from distance just before the end of the quarter to make the score 49-39 after three periods of play.
- A quick 6-0 run by the Wolves to start the fourth saw them push their lead out to its largest of the contest at 55-39. E&H rallied late and closed the gap to just five points at 65-60 with 46 seconds left in the contest. The Wolves made their chances from the free throw line down the stretch to hold off the charging Wasps by the 69-64 final.
Emory & Henry Leaders
- Harris led E&H with a team-high 18 points, seven rebounds and four assists. Freshman guard Kinley Painter (Johnson City, Tenn.) added 16 points, five assists and a rebound off of the bench.
- Hall finished with 11 points, seven rebounds and a steal while freshman forward Hali Harris (Richmond, Va.) collected seven points, two rebounds, two assists and a blocked shot.
Newberry Individual Leaders
- Rickell Brown led all scorers with a game-high 24 points, six rebounds and a pair of steals. Jada Brown went for a double-double of 12 points, 12 rebounds and a pair of helpers.
- Marykate Kent posted 10 points, five boards, one assist and a steal while Leigha Harris had nine points, five steals, four rebounds, one assist and a block.
A Deeper Look
- Emory & Henry shot 40.4% (21-for-52) overall from the field and a season-high 52.4% (11-for-21) from beyond the three-point line. The Wasps were 11-for-15 (73.3%) at the charity stripe.
- Newberry was 24-for-62 (38.7%) shooting overall and converted 35.7% (5-for-14) of their attempts from distance. The Wolves converted 72.7% (16-for-22) of their chances at the free throw line.
