Newberry Women's Basketball Upends Emory & Henry, 79-66, Saturday Afternoon

EMORY, Va. – The Emory & Henry University Women's Basketball Team (3-6, 1-3 SAC) fell in South Atlantic Conference action to visiting Newberry College (7-3, 1-3 SAC) inside the John Rutledge King Center Saturday afternoon. The Wolves earned the win by a 79-66 final margin.

How It Happened
- Neither team could break through on the scoreboard until the 7:15 mark when junior guard Rhyan Harris (Salem, Va.) drilled a three to put the Wasps on top early. After falling behind 8-5, the Wolves battled back with a 13-0 rally to jump ahead 18-8. A jumper from redshirt freshman guard Dot Mills (Canton, N.C.) managed to cut the deficit to 19-13 at the end of the first quarter.
- The squads went back-and-forth at the start of the second stanza and Newberry held a 24-17 advantage at the media timeout. Back-to-back buckets from sophomore guard Lyndie Ramsey (Elizabethton, Tenn.) brought E&H within five at 26-21, but the Wolves would finish the half on a 7-0 run to take a 33-21 lead into the halftime break.
- The Wasps tallied the first five points of the second half to trim the Wolves' lead, but Newberry went on another run, this of an 11-2 variety to push their advantage out to its largest of the contest at 44-28 with 3:49 remaining in the third stanza. The visitors held serve and led 52-38 at the end of three.
- Emory & Henry picked up the offense in the fourth as they managed to pull back within single digits at 66-58 at the 1:55 mark. That was as close as the Wasps would get as the Wolves pulled away for the 79-66 victory. 

Emory & Henry Leaders
- Harris led the Wasps with 12 points, four rebounds and a pair of assists while sophomore guard Tori West (Richmond, Va.) added 12 points and a pair of boards off of the bench.
- Freshman guard Kinley Painter (Johnson City, Tenn.) recorded 10 points, a career-high six assists, two rebounds and a steal for the Wasps. Junior forward Gracyn Hall (Randleman, N.C.) finished with nine points, five rebounds, two assists and a steal.

Newberry Individual Leaders
- Marykate Kent led all scorers with a game-high 27 points, three rebounds and an assist. Rickell Brown posted 20 points, three helpers, two steals, one blocked shot and a rebound.
- Jada Brown registered nine points, five rebounds and an assist while Destiny Mattison had six points, 10 rebounds, two steals and a blocked shot in the win. 

A Deeper Look
- Emory & Henry shot 39.6 percent (21-for-53) from the field, hitting five three-pointers (23.8%). The Wasps went 19-for-24 (79.2%) at the free throw line.
- Newberry made 22-of-56 (39.3%) of their shots and was 7-for-17 (41.2%) from deep. The Wolves converted 73.7 percent (28-of-38) of their free throws.
- Newberry outrebounded the Wasps 38-36, and held an 11-9 advantage on second chance points.
- The Wolves won the turnover battle, forcing 19 compared to committing 14. Newberry took advantage of the miscues to the tune of 21 points off turnovers, while the Wasps could manage only 13.
- The Wasps forced the ball inside as they recorded 28 points in the painted area while the Wolves tallied 22.
- The Emory & Henry bench outscored the Newberry reserves by a 28-13 margin.
- The contest saw just one tie and one lead change.

- Emory & Henry hits the road again on Wednesday, December 17 when the Wasps travel to take on Lincoln Memorial University. Tip is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. as the opener of a doubleheader with the men's team.
