Wasps Finish Second At VMI Winter Classic

LEXINGTON, Va. – The Emory & Henry University Track & Field Teams continued their indoor schedules Saturday, competing at the VMI Winter Classic. The men's team placed second, taking home a pair of first-place finishes and breaking one program record. The women's team was eighth and saw one record fall, while tying two more program bests.

Top Men's Performances

Track
- Junior Barlowe Branch, III (Petersburg, Va.) placed eighth in the 60 meter dash, posting a time of 7.09.
- Junior Joshua Black (Woodbridge, Va.) was sixth in the 60 meter hurdles, setting a new program record with his time of 8.64.
- Black recorded a 15th place finish in the 200 meters with a 23.23, while freshman Vada Howard (Lynchburg, Va.) was 18th in 23.78 and senior Willie Williams (Manassas, Va.) was 19th with a 23.80.
- Senior T.J. Pecina (Hayter's Gap, Va.) finished in 15th in the 400 meters, finishing in 52.60.
- The Wasps dominated the 800 meters as sophomore Hayden Pugh (Louisa, Va.) took home medalist honors with his time of 1:57.12. Senior Cody Pecina (Hayter's Gap, Va.) was second in 1:59.78, junior Gavin Kegler (Woodbridge, Va.) took third in 2:00.01 and senior Samuel Tindall (Fort Defiance, Va.) placed sixth in 2:01.51.
- Senior Miles Baldwin (Willis, Va.) took home seventh, recording a time of 4:27.87 in the mile, just missing out on the program record by .67 seconds. Freshman Brady Widlake (Bristow, Va.) was 12th in 4:40.97, junior Davis Norman (Salem, Va.) was 13th in 4:43.85 and freshman J.T. Moore (Chilhowie, Va.) finished 15th in 4:45.34.
- Baldwin continued his day by finishing fifth in the 3000 meters, stopping the watches in 9:20.17. Junior Aidan Trautman (Centreville, Md.) took seventh in 9:29.46 and Moore was ninth in 9:35.01.
- Trautman was fourth in the 5000 meters, registering a time of 16:15.55, while senior Tommy Henzey, IV (Salem, Va.) finished eighth with a time of 17:05.69.
- The 4x400 meter relay team of Kegler, Pecina, Pugh and Tindall were third with their time of 3:28.09.

Field
- Junior Drew Craft (Covington, Va.) was fifth in the high jump, with a height of 1.80 meters, while junior Joseph Ihlenburg (Roanoke, Va.) finished seventh with the same completed height.
- Craft took seventh in the long jump, recording a distance of 6.71 meters, while Branch was ninth with a 6.36 meters and freshman TaiShaun Cooks (Forest, Va.) was 11th with his leap of 6.22 meters.
- Freshman Brock Ayers (Austinville, Va.) paced the Wasps with a fourth-place finish in the shot put, with a toss of 13.28 meters. Senior Gavin Lee (North Tazewell, Va.) was fourth with a 13.05 meter throw, while sophomore Malik Guadelupe (Woodbridge, Va.) was eighth (12.14 meters) and freshman Phillip Radford (Riner, Va.) was ninth (12.12 meters.).
- Craft finished fourth in the triple jump, putting up a jump of 13.57 meters. Cooks finished in ninth with his distance of 12.86 meters.
- Lee earned yet another medalist finish in the weight throw as he launched a throw of 17.51 meters to take home first place. Guadelupe's throw of 15.38 meters was good enough for third, while Ayers and Radford were fourth and sixth respectively.

Women's Top Performances

Track
- Freshman Alexandria Scott (Fredericksburg, Va.) placed 21st in the 200 meters, finishing in 27.38 while sophomore Aiyana Blakey (Woodbridge, Va.) was 23rd in 27.93.
- Scott placed 17th in the 400 meters with her time of 1:05.14.
- Sophomore Tess Somervell (Chilhowie, Va.) was fifth in the 800 meters, posting a time of 2:26.39. Junior McKenzie Tate (Wytheville, Va.) finished sixth with her 2:27.76.
- Freshman Lilia Yanez (El Paso, Texas) took 22nd in the mile with a 6:43.37.
- Yanez then finished 13th in the 3000 meters, finishing in 13:33.52.
- Senior Elise McKinney (Church Hill, Tenn.) was 13th in the 5000 meters in 20:36.00, while junior Hannah Rosen (Falls Church, Va.) was 14th in 23:22.83.
- The 4x400 relay team of Somervell, Tate, junior Kennedy Harris (Mineral, Va.) and junior Maya Turner (Midland, Va.) finished third with their time of 4:16.56.

Field
- Sophomore Mia Spangler (Floyd, Va.) was eighth in the high jump, posting a height of 1.50 meters, tying the program record.
- Spangler took fifth in the long jump with her leap of 5.22 meters, tying her own program best. Senior Alyssa Chappell (Church Hill, Tenn.) was eighth with a 4.81 meter jump.
- Senior Taylorann Cash (Buena Vista, Va.) finished 12th in the shot put with her toss of 10.60 meters, while senior Catie Leonard (Gray, Tenn.) was 19th with a 8.50 meter throw.
- Spangler continued her day with a sixth-place finish in the triple jump with a distance of 10.90 meters to set a new program standard.
- Freshman Chloe Spence (Riner, Va.) finished 13th in the weight throw with her distance of 10.88 meters. Cash finished 14th with a 9.88 meter throw, while Leonard was 16th with an 8.49 meter toss.

- Emory & Henry is back in action next Friday, February 20 when they travel to compete in the Tryon Last Chance Meet at Tryon International in Mill Spring, N.C.
