EMORY, Va. – The Emory & Henry men's and women's tennis teams finished their fall season with a couple of wins over the Royals of Johnson University (Both 0-2). The 9-0 win for the women's team is their second straight win on the year, while the 8-1 victory is the first for the men's side. The homecoming match saw a large crowd for the E&H tennis programs.
The men started off with a 3-0 sweep at doubles. The closest match was at two doubles, where Kamil Aliev (MOSCOW, Russia) and Jonathan Romano (Bland, Va.) won by a score of 8-3. The one and two spots were won 8-1 and 8-0, respectively.
At one singles, Alex Minasyan (MOSCOW, Russia) cruised to a 6-0, 6-2 victory. Junior John Dalton Ferguson (Gate City, Va.) also won quickly at the two spot, 6-1, 6-0. Luke Funkhouser (Gate City, Va.) won at the third flight 6-2, 6-4. The lone loss for the men came at four singles, in which Romano lost 6-4, 6-2. Nathan Horner (Orange, Va.) picked up a 6-1, 6-0 victory and Liam Davidson (Newport News, Va.) earned a 6-4, 6-2 win at five and six, respectively.
The women's team earned a perfect 9-0 victory versus Johnson University. In doubles, the women dropped only one game in all three matches. Sveva Mazzari (SAN REMO, Italy) blanked her opponent, winning 6-0, 6-0 at one singles. Gina Rutledge (Germanton, N.C.) gutted out a tough victory at two singles. The junior transfer won 2-6, 6-2, 1-0 (10-2). Lauren Riner (Coeburn, Va.) picked up a 6-2, 6-0 win at three. Kaitlyn Sheaves (Staunton, Va.) won 6-3, 6-0 at four. Kaitlin Meade (Coeburn, Va.) and Kala Curtis (Locust Grove, Va.) earned their first victories of the season at five and six singles. Meade won 6-1, 6-1, while Curtis defeated her opponent 6-1, 6-0.
Both tennis teams ended their fall seasons with great victories and look forward to continuing their respective seasons in the spring semester.
