PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – For the first time ever, the Emory & Henry College Men's Basketball Team is nationally ranked in the D3hoops.com Top 25 Poll, D3hoops.com officials announced late Monday. The Wasps are now ranked No. 21 in NCAA Division III after receiving votes for the previous two weeks.
Emory & Henry makes its historical climb into the Top 25 following a pair of Old Dominion Athletic Conference home wins last week. The Wasps posted a 102-81 win over the Hornets of Lynchburg College on Thursday, and on short rest, defeated the Randolph-Macon College Yellow Jackets by a 75-65 score Saturday to become the final undefeated team in league play at 8-0.
E&H is now 16-1 on the year, its best record through 17 games in the Division III era which began with the 1973-74 season. The Wasps' 8-0 ODAC mark is the best since the 1992-93 campaign when they won their first 10 league contests. That 1992-93 season was the last in a string of six years that saw Emory & Henry reach the NCAA Division III Tournament five times.
Whitman College continues its season-long run as the No. 1 team in the nation at 17-0 while Washington University in St. Louis moves up to second. Wittenberg University, Whitworth University and Augustana (Ill.) College round out the top five. A pair of E&H opponents from earlier in the season in Maryville (Tenn.) College and the College of Wooster (Ohio) are among teams now receiving votes.
The D3hoops.com Top 25 men's basketball poll is voted on by a group of 25 coaches, sports information directors and media members from across the country. The outlet is now in its 19th season providing nationwide coverage of college basketball's largest division, beginning in the fall of 1999.
