How It Happened
The Trojans wasted no time as they put up three runs on three hits, including a two-run home run, in the bottom of the first inning to jump ahead 3-0. Emory & Henry threatened in the top of the fourth when senior catcher Ky Gregoire (Waterloo, Ontario, CANADA) singled, junior first baseman J.D. James (China Grove, N.C.) walked and junior second baseman Ryan Paynton (Walnut Creek, Calif.) singled to load the bases with two outs. The Wasps could not find the clutch hit and stranded all three runners.
Anderson added to its lead with one in the fifth, four in the sixth and one more in the seventh as the Trojan pitchers limited the Wasp batters to just two hits over the final five innings of play to take game one by the 9-0 final. Kaleb Owens picked up the win for the Trojans, throwing seven scoreless innings while allowing five hits and striking out four batters. Senior righty Jacob Nester (Hillsville, Va.) was saddled with the loss for E&H after surrendering eight runs on nine hits over 5.2 innings of work. Gregoire finished with a pair of hits while four other Wasps had one hit each.
