Carson-Newman Baseball Defeats Emory & Henry, 14-2, In SAC Series Opener

EMORY, Va. – The Emory & Henry University Baseball Team (6-16, 3-10 SAC) opened its South Atlantic Conference weekend series with a loss to visiting Carson-Newman University (12-11, 4-9 SAC) Friday afternoon. The Eagles erupted for seven runs in the third inning as they rolled to the 14-2 run-rule victory.

How It Happened
Neither team could push across a run in the opening two innings of play, but the Eagles struck first in the top of the third. Carson-Newman put up seven runs on five hits, including a pair of home runs, and an error to take a 7-0 lead. Emory & Henry got a run back in the bottom of the third. Sophomore outfielder Stuart Callahan, III (Stuart, Va.) reached on an error, advanced to second on a walk and scored on an RBI base hit off the bat of junior designated hitter Kyle Fields (Lynchburg, Va.) to cut the deficit to 7-1. 

Carson-Newman would add two runs in the fourth, four in the fifth and one more in the sixth to push its advantage out to 14-1. E&H pushed a run across in the bottom of the sixth when Callahan reached on another error, moved up to second on a wild pitch, stole third base and scored on another wild pitch to send the score to its final at 14-2. 

Ryan Higgins earned the win for the Eagles after allowing one unearned run on just three hits while striking out six batters over five innings of work. Senior Jacob Nester (Hillsville, Va.) took the loss for E&H after surrendering 11 runs, nine earned, on 11 hits while fanning six C-N hitters. Senior third baseman Drew Park (Mooresville, N.C.) finished with a pair of hits while Fields had the other hit and RBI for Emory & Henry.

Emory & Henry wraps up the three-game weekend series on Saturday with a doubleheader against the Eagles. First pitch of game one of the double dip is scheduled for noon from Porterfield-DeVault Field.
