FERRUM, Va. – Emory & Henry College sophomore Matt Nelson has been named to the 2011 VaSID All-State College Division Men's Tennis Team, VaSID officials announced Friday. The Galax, Va., native wins All-Virginia honors for the first time in his career.
Nelson was named to the All-Old Dominion Athletic Conference First Team at No. 1 doubles along with junior Chip Wintringham (Burlington, N.C.) and took all-conference second-team honors at No. 3 singles. He posted season records of 15-2 in singles and 12-6 in doubles, while finishing with a 7-1 singles and a 6-3 doubles mark in ODAC play.
As a team, the Wasps finished 12-10 on the season with a 4-5 mark in the league. E&H advanced to the semifinals of the 2011 ODAC Tournament, before falling to Washington & Lee University.
The University of Mary Washington's Alex Blahkin was selected as Rookie of the Year while Eagle mentor Todd Helbling was chosen as Coach of the Year as UMW advanced to the Elite Eight in the 2011 NCAA Division III Tournament.
Washington and Lee's Hayden White took home Player of the Year honors after leading the Generals to the second round of the NCAA Tournament and advancing to the round of 16 at the Division III Singles Tournament.
The VaSID All-State teams are selected by sports information directors of member institutions of the Virginia Sports Information Directors across the Commonwealth of Virginia. VaSID, founded in 1983, selects teams in two divisions (University and College) for 12 sports and three single-division teams in addition to Academic All-State teams across all sports.
