ABINGDON, Va. – The Emory & Henry College Athletic Department held the Sixth Annual I-HEY Golf Tournament at Glenrochie Country Club in Abingdon on Monday, June 3. Intermittent showers over the morning did not dampen the spirits of the players as a total of $15,125 was raised for the I-HEY Fund with 72 golfers participating in the event.
“The Department of Athletics receives tremendous financial support from the I-HEY Golf tournament and all the proceeds go directly to our General I-HEY fund,” said Director of Athletics Myra Sims. “We are able to supplement each team’s budget from the General I-HEY fund, as well as do upgrades to the weight room and in other playing venues. We really appreciate the sponsorship support that we receive from individuals and businesses, and also appreciate so many people playing in the event.”
Winning the tournament was the team of Ron Bales, Larry Bales, Charlie Sydnor and Ron Thompson as they shot a 59 on the 6,263-yard, par-72 course to finish at -13 on the day.
The second place team was Chad Pennington, Wayne Austin, Lee Brannon and Mike McCool, carding a 12-under 60. Byron Cantrell, George Dobbs, Wayne Stack and David Prasnicki finished third (61).
Other award winners included Luke Sampson for longest drive, DeWayne Moore for closest to the pin and Chris Barker for longest putt.
“Just as important as the revenue we gain is the time to socialize with the loyal alumni and friends of E&H athletics. I love the opportunity to interact with our friends in this atmosphere and really appreciate this relaxed time on the golf course,” added Sims.
I-HEY is the official fundraising arm of Emory & Henry College’s athletic department. For more than 60 years, alumni and friends have supported athletic programs at E&H by joining I-HEY (I Help Every Year). Contributions help teams purchase equipment and pay for travel to and from competition. Gifts earmarked to I-HEY or to any one of the Wasps’ 13 intercollegiate athletic teams help young men and women become leaders on the field and court as well as in the classroom.
