Myra Sims is in her second year as Director of Athletics at
Emory & Henry College and her 26th year in college athletics.
Hired in March of 2010, Sims came to E&H from Emory University
in Atlanta, where she served for 24 years as Head Women’s
Basketball Coach and later as an Assistant Athletic Director.
As Director of Athletics at E&H, Sims oversees all 13
intercollegiate athletic teams, is responsible for a staff of over
40 coaches, administrators and staff, manages all athletic
facilities and facility improvements, coordinates all athletic
fundraising in conjunction with the College’s Advancement
Office and is responsible for compliance with NCAA and ODAC
regulations.
After the 2002-03 basketball season, Sims hung up her whistle and
moved into an administrative role in the Emory athletic department.
She served as Assistant Director of Athletics for two and a half
years before being promoted to Associate AD and Senior Woman
Administrator. In January of 2007, Sims was named Senior Associate
Director of Athletics, a post she held until coming to Emory &
Henry.
While an administrator at the Atlanta, Ga., school, Sims oversaw
construction and improvements to many of the Eagles’ athletic
facilities, including a $10 million expansion of Emory’s
Woodruff P.E. Center. She was also a major player in formulating
operating policy for each of the University’s 18 varsity
sports, managing the department’s multi-million dollar annual
budget and NCAA compliance. Sims even served as Interim Director of
Athletics during the summer of 2007.
As a coach, Sims led the Eagles to NCAA Division III Sweet 16
appearances in 1995 and 1997 and compiled 204 wins in 15 seasons as
the program’s first-ever coach. Sims also served as the Head
Volleyball Coach at Emory for three seasons (1987-89), also
creating the program from scratch.
After graduating from UNCA, Sims served as the Head Volleyball and
Assistant Women’s Basketball Coach for two seasons (1982-84)
and the 1983-84 Bulldog women’s basketball team won the NAIA
National Championship.
Sims received her bachelor’s degree in psychology from UNC
Asheville in 1981 and completed her master’s degree in
recreation administration at Georgia State University in 1997. A
native of Hiltons, Virginia, Sims attended Gate City High School.
She now resides in Abingdon.
