Emory & Henry Volleyball Sweeps Ferrum, 3-0, On Senior Night Thursday
EMORY, Va. – The Emory & Henry College Volleyball Team (17-9) picked up a three-set sweep over Ferrum College (3-20), 3-0 (25-16, 25-17, 25-8), Thursday evening at the John Rutledge King Center. Prior to the match the Wasps honored their three seniors: right-side hitter Tessa Burton (Gate City, Va.), middle Kim Caudill (Galax, Va.) and Jamie Cockerham (Galax, Va.). Dr. Jack Roper, the team's faculty mentor, was also honored for his contributions, as he is resigning at the conclusion of the academic year.
In the first set, Emory & Henry broke open a 3-3 tie with a 14-4 run to go up 17-7. Ferrum would fight back with a trio of three-point runs late to close the gap to 22-16. The Wasps ended the set with a three-point spurt, with the last point coming on a kill by Caudill.
E&H got out to a 5-1 lead early in the second frame and never looked back. Up 10-7, the Wasps went on an 8-1 run to go up 18-8 and cruised to the 25-17 victory.
The third stanza was all Emory & Henry. A seven-point serving run by freshman outside hitter Hannah Stewart (Boone, N.C.) got things started as E&H finished the contest on a 14-2 run for a 25-8 score.
The Wasps were led by junior middle Nicole Tesh (Boone, N.C.) with 11 kills and a .421 hitting percentage. Cockerham had eight kills and 11 digs while Caudill and Stewart chipped in six kills apiece. Burton finished the night with four kills and three blocks.
Ferrum was paced by Kayla Trippeer with nine kills and Hannah Shumaker with 18 assists and nine digs. Leah Quinones registered a team-high 10 digs.
Emory & Henry will return to the court on Saturday when it hosts Concord University in its regular season finale. First serve between the Wasps and Mountain Lions is set for 1:00 p.m.
