J. Sanders Henderson, III is entering the third season of his second stint as an Assistant Football Coach for Emory & Henry College. This year, he will continue to assist with the defensive linemen.
Henderson previously coached at Emory & Henry for one season in the late 1980’s under Hall of Fame head coach Lou Wacker.
A 30-year veteran of the Virginia public school system, Henderson has taught and coached in Carroll, Smyth and Tazewell Counties. He most recently was the principal of Chilhowie Elementary School before retiring. Henderson taught at Richlands High School for 16 years, serving as Athletic Director for three years, and was an assistant on the Blue Tornados’ state championship team in 1992.
In addtion to his work in the school system, Henderson has been a Virginia High School League basketball official for 35 years. He also serves on the Washington County School Board for the Jefferson District.
Henderson received his bachelor’s degree in Physical Education from Emory & Henry in 1985. He also holds a master’s degree in educational leadership from Radford University.
He resides on his family farm in Saltville with his wife, the former Jill Marie Holmes. Henderson has a grown daughter, Marisa.
