The Emory & Henry softball team is optimistic about a strong spring season based on the results of its recent Fall Tournament at Ferrum College.

The Wasps defeated Potomac State College and Radford University (10-8 and 10-5 respectively) in their first two games. The team barely lost its final match to Ferrum, 5-6, after leading the entire until the bottom of the seventh inning, when Ferrum hit a three-run homerun.

“I thought the tournament went really well for our team,” said head coach Kristen Diamond. “I had the opportunity to see who was going to be my leaders this year, and I was pleased with the outcome.”

The team excelled with new talent in the form of first-year students Brandi Turman, Sam Hammer, Nicole Holdaway, Rachel Hash and Shannon Kelly. “Brandi earned her starting position on the field and will add much-needed depth to our line-up,” Diamond said.

Seniors Dana Dettmar and Jamie Roy and sophomore Tuesdee Woods brought strong bats the provided home runs and solid hits throughout the tournament. Woods hit three homeruns and went 9 for 11 at the plate. Dettmar went 10 for 11 at the plate. And Roy was 7 for 11.
“I feel we know exactly what we need to accomplish to be successful in the spring,” Diamond said.
