Salem, Va. (April 8, 2009) -- A tenacious Emory & Henry softball team fought hard against a heavily favored Roanoke College Wednesday before barely dropping both games of a double header.
Megan Evans pitched five innings for the Wasps and helped keep the Maroons in check for much of the first game. But the Wasps also faced tough pitching from Roanoke and dropped the game 0-2.
With Stephanie Cartwright on the mound for most of game 2, Emory & Henry (1-13 in the ODAC) continued to pressure Roanoke (10-6 in the ODAC) in the second game. The Wasps scored two runs in the fifth inning and then surged agead in the top of the seventh by scoring five runs.
The Maroons added two in the bottom of the seventh to tie the game and send it into an extra inning. Roanoke added one in the bottom of the eighth, giving the Maroons the 8-7 win.
Samantha Hammer and Tuesdee Woods led the Wasps in hitting in Game 2. Hammer notched her first career home run and had four RBIs on the night, while Woods added a 3-run home run. Both home runs came in the seventh inning for the Wasps.
In Game 1, Dana Dettmar led the Wasps with two hits, and Laken Price and Laura Hudson each had one.
