MILLIGAN, Tenn. (Oct. 9, 2009) -- The Emory & Henry men's tennis team ended a successful fall season with a 7-2 victory over Milligan College Friday, showing strength across its line-up.
Sophomore Chip Wintringham of Emory & Henry dominated Matt Clark of Milligan (6-1, 6-0) in the No. 1 flight, while Matthew Nelson defeated Ricky Jones of Milligan (6-1, 6-1) at No. 2.
Milligan's No. 3 player, Wesley Rice defeated Michael Rogers 6-3, 6-0 in singles while Ethan Brooks of Emory & Henry topped Milligans Ben Way, 6-3, 6-3.
With the match decided, the No. 5 and 6 singles were played in eight-game pro-sets. The No. 5 match went to Bryan Upshaw of Milligan, who defeated Webster Gilley, 8-1. At No. 6, Emory & Henry's Hunter Romano defeated Mickey Brown,8-5.
Emory & Henry swept the three doubles matches. Wintrinham and Nelson were successful at No. 1, while Romano and Rogers won at No. 2, and Gilley and Brooks succeeded at No. 3.
Head Coach Jim Barker praised his team for the win, which was accomplished against a traditionally strong team, and for the teams strength this fall. "We've had some tough matches this fall, and we've played extremely well. We're looking forward to the spring competition with great optimism," he said.
