EMORY, Va. -- The Emory & Henry men's tennis team did not drop a set on its way to a 9-0 victory over Southern Virginia Monday.
The Wasps continued to roll after a decisive tournament victory at Ferrum College the previous week.
Setting the momentum for the E&H team was No. 1 Chip Wintringham, who knocked off Stefan Vlassek of SVA 6-0, 6-0. Emory & Henry's Matthew Nelson at No. 2 was also solid, defeating Phillip Whitley 6-1, 6-1. At No. 3, Michael Rogers of E&H topped David Cotter of SVA 6-3, 6-3. At No. 6, Hunter Romano defeated Chase Christensen 6-1, 6-4.
By this time, the Wasps, who had swept the doubles competition, had secured the team victory and the remaining singles matches were played in eight-game pro-sets. At No. 4, Ethan Brooks of E&H defeated Brian Stout 8-0 and Nov. 5 Webster Gilley defeated Christopher Rogers 8-0.
In doubles, the No. 1 team of Wintringham and Nelson defeated Vlassek and Whitley 8-2. Rogers and Romano, the No. 2 flight for the Wasps, defeated Cotter and Stout. At No. 3, Brooks and Gilley knocked off Rogers and Christenson 8-1.
