GREENSBORO, N.C. (Feb. 21, 2010) -- The Emory & Henry men's tennis team swept Greensboro and Ferrum colleges Sunday, giving the team a strong start to its spring schedule and underscoring the team's continuing talent for winning.
The Wasps won all six singles matches in both contests without dropping a set.
Against Greensboro, the team was led by sophomore Chip Wintringham at No. 1, who defeated Clay Hamilton 6-2, 6-2. First-year student Mathew Nelson at No. 2 was a 6-4, 6-2 winner over Caleb Shelton and junior Michael Rogers, playing at No. 3, was a 7-5, 6-4 winner over Mike Benfield.
Other singles winners for the Wasps were Ethan Brooks at No. 4, Adam Henderson at No. 5 and William Garrison at No. 6.
In doubles, Wintringham and Nelson teamed up to beat Hamilton and Zach Bruff at No. 1. Henderson and Brooks, playing in the No. 2 position, defeated Shelton and Benfield. And Hunter Romano and Rogers joined up at No. 3 to defeated KevinKoval and Jonathan Deming.
Later in the day against Ferrum, Wintringham was a solid 6-2, 2-0 winner over Chris Miller while Nelson topped John Hartin 6-0, 6-2. Rogers finished out the top three with a 6-1-2 victory over Ferrum's Bob Dill.
Brooks at No. 4, Henderson at No. 5 and Brian Butler at No. 6 finished out the E&H singles roster with easy wins.
The same E&H doubles teams that competed against Greensboro were also victorious against Ferrum.
Emory & Henry advanced to 4-1 for the season and will face Maryville College at home on Friday.
