EMORY, Va. (Dec. 24, 2009) -- A revived Emory & Henry men's soccer team edged out Bridgewater College Saturday in a close-fought conference game that gave the struggling Wasps some hope for their future.
Although the Wasps have failed to light up the scoreboard significantly this season, head coach Travis Fravel has contended throughout the season that he has one of the most talented -- and youngest -- teams that Emory & Henry soccer has fielded. It's inability to execute points this season should not be a measure of its potential.
Friday night provided fans with a taste of what of a strong, experienced team might offer.
The Wasps came into the first half charging, scoring the first two goals, one by PJ Henson in the 24th minute and the next by Erik Olson in the 47th minute.
Bridgewater did not counter until later in the game, when it quickly added two point to tie the match.
Henson, however, followed up with his second point, the game-winner in the 63rd minute.
It was the Wasps' first conference win. That it came after a long series of losses, however, demonstrated that the young team was prepared to gain the most out of this season and apply its experience to a better season in 2010.
Emory & Henry host Guilford Wednesday in its final match of the season.
