EMORY, Va. (Oct. 10, 2006) -- A slow start and some missed opportunities kept a fifth straight victory out of the reach for the Emory & Henry football team Saturday, as the Wasps fell to the Tigers of Hampden-Sydney 23-12.

The Tigers lurched to an early 14-0 lead in the first quarter before the Wasps were able to find some traction with a 66-yard touchdown run by Caleb Jennings.

The Wasps scored again early in the third quarter on a 28-yard field goal by Ked Byrd. But Hampden-Sydney raised its game again by scoring on a drive set up by a series of well-executed Hampden-Sydney passes.

Before the game's end, the teams exchanged safeties, the Tigers on an E&H penalty in the Hampden-Sydney endzone and the Wasps on an intentional safety taken by the Tigers in the last minute of the game.

The Wasps offense had moved the ball aggressively but was held scoreless on three runs that reached inside the Hampden-Sydney 20-yard line.

The E&H defense took down two interceptions and played strong against a fast-pace Tiger offense.

Emory & Henry (4-1) travels to Ashland to face Randolph-Macon.
