GUILFORD, N.C. (Nov. 14, 2009) -- The Emory & Henry football team ended its 2009 season with a strong 17-3 win, a one-win improvement over the previous season and the best season for the Wasps in nine years.

Offensively and defensively, the Wasps dominated the Quakers of Guilford College in the first half, which ended with a touchdown pass from E&H quarterback Drew Piscopo to senior receiver Jonathan Hawkins and taking the score to 17-3.

Emory & Henry finished the year 7-3 overall and 3-3 in the conference. In 2008, the Wasps tied for first place in the conference with a 6-4, 4-2 record. This year's record represents the team's best season since 2000, when it managed eight wins.

The day was marked by an impressive running game by Emory & Henry’s Caleb Jennings who totaled more than 297 all-purpose yards rushing, more than of which were scored in the second half. Jennings, who scored the Wasps’ first touchdown with a 59-yard run, finished the season with more than 1,300 yards rushing.

The second half saw strong defense from both teams that kept the score unchanged. The fourth quarter was marked by two punts from T.J. Frazier that forced the Quaker offense to start two drives within their own 10-yard line. The long drives forced the Guilford running game to eat up large chunks of time.

Shane Wicks led the E&H defense with nine tackles while Ed Smith and Andrew Giordani each made seven.

The Wasps clinched the win when the Quakers failed to score after its third drive of the fourth quarter and leaving just over two minutes in the game. That gave the Wasps the chance to keep the ball on the ground and, with the help of a first down gained by running back Justin Lamb, run down the clock.
