100+ Years of Athletic Excellence

Emory & Henry College boasts a long tradition of athletic success and pride, including a beloved football team with a record of success that dates to the early part of the 20th century and includes two appearances in the Tangerine Bowl in the 1950s and the origination of the "Emory & Henry Spread Formation," made famous by former University of Florida football head coach Steve Spurrier and used on occasion by the NFL's Tennessee Titans.

In 2004, y'all magazine listed Emory & Henry among the 40 colleges and universities in the South with the greatest football traditions. "Not to be overshadowed by neighboring Division I powerhouses . . .Winning seasons plus pride and pageantry equals one of the greatest Southern football traditions."

Supporting the general E&H tradition of athletic excellence are many other traditions, many of them specific to each E&H sport. E&H sports teams have a tradition of service. For example, E&H women athletes sponsor an annual Christmas party for area children of low-income families. E&H athletes also have a tradition of leadership, which encourages student athletes to apply their team-building skills to work in other parts of the campus community and beyond.
