SALEM, Va. (March 18, 2009) -- The Emory & Henry baseball team gained a crucial 13-9 win over Roanoke College Wednesday under the lights in Salem.
E&H pitcher Keith Fenner, a sophomore from Chilhowie, scored the win on the mound with five strikeouts, leading his team to its third win of the season and bolstering its hopes in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference.
The team was aided by excellent batting. Lee VanLear, a junior from Verona, Va., went three for five at bat with three runs scored, two runs batted in and one double. Anthony Lowry, a junior from Covington, Va., had two hits out of five times at bat and scored three runs. He also had one double and one stolen base.
Sophomore Nick Windom, a first-baseman from Moseley, Va., was two for four from the plate with two runs batted in and one run scored. Meanwhile, Remington Hedgepath, a sophomore outfielder from Winston-Salem, N.C., had one hit with two runs batted in.
The victory gives a boost to the Wasps as they head into the weekend against Eastern Mennonite, a team that Roanoke defeated earlier in the season. It also improves the chances for this young Emory & Henry team, which has only two seniors, at a spot in the ODAC tournament.
