Emory, Va. (April 4, 2009) -- Emory & Henry's baseball team lost both games of a double header against conference foe Randolph-Macon Saturday, although the Wasps ran up 12 runs in a high-scoring second game that demonstrated the team's offensive strength.
After losing the first game 2-7 to the Yellow Jackets, the Wasps became aggressive at the bat in the second game as they tried to match the offensive prowess of Randolph-Macon. Part of that aggressive play included a grandslam home run by junior Anthony Lowry, one of the team's hottest hitters.
The Yellow Jackets struck early with four runs in the first inning. The Wasps answered back with two runs in the second inning. The first was scored by sophomore Nick Windom who singled to right center and advanced to third before being driven home by sophomore Remington Hedgepeth. The Yellow-Jackets walked Emory & Henry's Josh Rigney which advanced Garrett Price, who came to the bases on a single, to home plate.
The Yellow Jackets added four more runs in the third inning, another in the fourth, and five more in the fifth, before Emory & Henry responded with four points of their own in the fifth.
Randolph-Macon added six more points in the seventh and eighth innings. The Wasps struck back five more at the bottom of the eighth. The scoring was set up after junior Codie Mitchell singled down the middle, Price was walked and Josh Nelson singled. Rigney followed with a single up the middle that drove Mitchell home. With the bases loaded Lowry belted a four-run homer.
Still trailing by nine points in the bottom of the ninth, the Wasps managed a single run, scored by Mitchell who made it home on a wild pitch after doubling and advancing to third.
The Wasps will go up against Bluefield College April 7 at Bluefield.
