Emory, Va. (April 9, 2009) -- Powerful hitting from Emory & Henry's Anthony Lowery helped the Wasps to a two-game victory over the Cobras of Virginia Intermont Thursday.

Lowery, a junior, collected four hits, sent three runners to home base and scored four times on the sunny day at Porterfield/DeVault Field. First-year student Garrett Price also helped in a big way with three runs and five hits.

Jared Pierce, a sophomore, claimed three hits and three runs while junior Codie Mitchell delivered three RBIs. Other contributors were Remington Hedgepeth with two runs and one hit, Nick Windom with two runs and one hit, Josh Nelson with two runs and one hit, and Josh Rigney with one run and two hits.

On defense, sophomore pitchers #33-Jared Surber and Keith Fenner, both former Chilhowie High Warriors, struck out three apiece. Surber picked up his first career win for the Wasps while Fenner picked up his first save for the Wasps

The two teams each scored once in the first inning of the first game. In the bottom of the second inning, however, the Wasps scored three runs, which left the Cobras trying to play catch-up. They came up short in the top of the seventh inning, making the final score 4-3 for the Wasps.

In game two, the Wasps struck first with the runs in the first, but the Cobras answered back with eight of their own, taking the lead 8-4 at the end of the second. The VIC Cobras added one more at the top of the third, but the Wasps answered significantly with eight runs in the bottom half of the third, three more in the fourth and six more in the sixth. The final score was 15-9 in favor of Emory & Henry.
